The automotive industry is proud of its impressive sales figures for December 2021. However, after the increased taxes, price increases and restrictions on vehicle financing have begun to affect vehicle sales.
Companies such as Hyundai Nishat, Pak Suzuki Motor Company (PSMC) and Honda Atlas Cars Limited (HACL) reported significantly lower sales compared to the previous month, which had a big impact on overall figures, according to data released by the Pakistan Automobile Manufacturers Association.
With this change, the following cars became the five best-selling cars in January 2022:
1. Suzuki Wagon R
The Uber driver’s favorite car, the Wagon R, has always been among the top five dealers in Pakistan. PSMC sold an impressive 1537 units of Wagon R. These figures once again make the Wagon R one of the best-selling cars in Pakistan and consistently rank it as the best.
2. Toyota Yaris
Yaris has recently witnessed relatively low sales in Pakistan. The car has sold fewer Corolla and Corolla and City in the last two months. Toyota Indus Motor Company (IMC) sold 2093 Yaris last month, becoming the fourth best-selling car of the month.
3. Honda City
The “new model” Honda City has gained a lot of popularity in Pakistan, despite the delivery time of up to six months. According to our sources, HACL sold 2928 units of the City in January 2022, making it the second best-selling sedan in Pakistan.
The success of the city is mainly due to its significant improvement over its predecessor, the Fifth Generation City. Although still a generation older, its popularity means it will remain on sale in Pakistan for another decade. Let’s hope HACL proves our mistake.
4. Toyota Corolla
Despite targeting only the upper echelons of Pakistan, the Toyota Corolla has regained the title of “best-selling sedan” in Pakistan. Toyota IMC sold 3,435 Corollas last month, up 1.8 percent year-on-year and 80.6 percent month-on-month, making it the second best-selling car of the month.
Suzuki Alto proved to be the real heir of the legendary Mehra. Despite significantly fewer sales than in December 2021, the Alto was still the best-selling car in Pakistan. PSMC sold 3,864 Alto cars, the number one car in Pakistan for the third consecutive month since the beginning of the new year.
December 2021 released mass car sales figures amid fears of a pre-purchase due to price increases. Experts believe that car sales in the coming days will be hit hard by new prices, tax increases and restrictions on financing.
In any case, the automotive industry is still growing with the arrival of new cars and carmakers. Increased competition has stabilized overall demand, and therefore the car market is growing.
